NAGALAND: In a major milestone for Nagaland, over 19,000 families have received new homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) initiative. So far, 48,826 houses have been approved for construction, with 19,300 already completed, according to the Ministry of Panchayats and Rural Development.
The scheme has made a noticeable difference in the remote hills of Nagaland, where development projects often face challenges due to difficult terrain and logistical issues. The newly built pucca houses have given many families not just a place to live, but also a sense of security, pride, and belonging, the ministry said.
These homes are constructed on solid stone columns and elevated platforms, which help prevent dampness and termite damage, ensuring the houses last longer. The PMAY-G scheme represents a vision for a more inclusive India, empowering people and contributing to the country’s overall progress, the statement added.
In addition to providing homes, the scheme has also boosted local economies. In Nagaland, beneficiaries have used locally sourced materials like bamboo and lightweight concrete, helping reduce construction costs while also building skills and promoting self-reliance within the community.
The homes blend traditional designs with modern construction techniques, reflecting the region’s cultural heritage. Bamboo mats decorate the walls and ceilings, and CGI sheets are used for the roofs, offering a functional yet traditional aesthetic.
"Safe and secure homes enable families to focus on education, health, and livelihoods, paving the way for future progress. In Nagaland, this transformation is evident, as families move into their new homes with hope for a better tomorrow," a senior ministry official said.
