Paris Olympics: Chinese AI Takes Diving Training to New Heights

China's national diving team is making waves at the Paris Olympics, thanks to a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) training system developed by tech giant Baidu. This innovative technology is enhancing the team's performance and setting new standards in sports training.

The AI system, praised by Lu Feixiang, a senior engineer at Baidu, boasts advanced capabilities. It captures intricate details of diving movements that traditional video systems miss, provides immediate feedback, and offers real-time analysis. This allows athletes to compare their current performances with their previous bests in precise detail.

This AI system is a prime example of how artificial intelligence is transforming the Paris 2024 Games, which some are calling the "first AI Olympics." AI is being widely used in training, refereeing, broadcasting, and even anti-doping efforts.

"Diving requires executing complex maneuvers in a split-second window, from the jump to the water entry," explained Lu Feixiang. "Perfecting these details is essential for achieving the splashless dives for which Chinese athletes are renowned."

Traditional video recording struggles with capturing such rapid sequences, making data analysis time-consuming and less immediate. Baidu's AI system, built on their ChatGPT-like product and the large language model Ernie Bot, overcomes these limitations by providing clear, accurate, and comprehensive insights into the dives.

Quan Hongchan, who clinched gold in the women's synchronized 10-meter platform event with her partner Chen Yuxi, highlighted the system's impact. "The AI system allows for timely playback and scoring, which helps me refine my technique," she said.

Chen Yuxi added, "AI breaks down movement details, assisting me in mastering the timing and control of my entries."
