KOCHI/THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tensions soared in Kerala on Friday as widespread protests erupted following alarming allegations from female actors within the Malayalam film industry. The Leader of the Opposition, V D Satheesan, sharply criticized the ruling CPI(M)-led government, accusing it of protecting those implicated in the scandal, including actor-politician Mukesh, who has been accused of sexual misconduct.
In cities like Kochi and Kollam, members of the Mahila Congress took to the streets, demanding the resignation of Mukesh, a CPI(M) MLA, and called for an exhaustive investigation into the grave accusations brought forth by female actors to the Justice Hema Committee.
Protesters in Kochi expressed their anger by symbolically beating effigies of Mukesh and other accused individuals with brooms. Meanwhile, in Kollam, demonstrators gathered outside Mukesh's residence, urging him to step down from his MLA position immediately.
Satheesan claimed that a "power group" within the ruling party, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is shielding those implicated in the scandal. He further alleged that even prominent Left leaders who have called for action, are being pressured and silenced by this group.
"The so-called progressive leaders are powerless against this influential faction," Satheesan remarked. He expressed concern that the government's inaction, despite survivors bravely speaking out to the Justice Hema Committee, would lead to further disillusionment.
"This is a serious breach of justice," the opposition leader asserted.
Satheesan also criticized the Chief Minister, stating that Vijayan has avoided public scrutiny since the Hema Committee report was released. "He is not even visible now. If he does hold a press conference, he only answers questions he prefers," the Congress leader added.
The opposition is demanding the resignation of Mukesh and a thorough investigation, as recommended by the Hema Committee report. "The decision on Mukesh's resignation should be taken by him and the CPI(M). If Mukesh refuses to resign, the party must act. By standing by the accused, the CPI(M) is making a mockery of itself in front of the public," Satheesan said.
The Justice K Hema Committee report, which was commissioned by the Kerala government after the 2017 actress assault case, has brought to light shocking allegations of sexual abuse by male actors in the Malayalam cinema industry. Following the report, several female actors have come forward, leading to the filing of FIRs against prominent figures, including Mukesh, and other industry personalities.
