November 19 marks the 1,000th day since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a milestone that highlights the ongoing conflict with no end in sight. On this significant day, Ukraine reaffirmed its commitment to resisting Russian forces, while Russia vowed to secure victory by any means necessary, including the potential use of nuclear weapons.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Russia’s military operation against Ukraine would continue and be completed, a statement that underlined Russia's determination in the ongoing war. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared images of destruction from a recent Russian drone strike, which killed at least nine people, including a child, in the Sumy region of eastern Ukraine. This attack has added to the growing humanitarian crisis, with Zelensky calling for increased global support to pressure Russia into pursuing peace.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has firmly stated, "Ukraine will never submit to the occupiers, and the Russian military will be punished for violating international law," emphasizing the country's unwavering stance against Russian aggression. The ministry also urged for more military aid from international allies, advocating for "peace through strength" rather than appeasement.
In a concerning move, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree expanding Russia’s nuclear doctrine, indicating that Russia may consider using nuclear weapons against non-nuclear countries supported by nuclear powers. This shift in nuclear policy came after the U.S. gave Ukraine the green light to use long-range missiles to target military sites within Russia, further intensifying the conflict.
The war has claimed numerous lives and continues to strain relations between Russia and the West. Despite ongoing efforts for diplomacy, the situation remains tense, with both sides showing little willingness to de-escalate.
Russian Drone Strikes and Chemical Weapons Use
A deadly Russian drone strike on the town of Glukhiv in the Sumy region left nine dead, including a child, and many more feared trapped beneath rubble. The attack targeted a dormitory near the Russian border, and Ukrainian officials reported that a total of 87 Russian drones were launched overnight, with 51 being shot down.
Ukraine continues to deal with a mounting toll of civilian casualties. A recent missile attack on the UNESCO-protected city of Odesa claimed 10 lives and left 55 injured. This attack coincided with the anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
Amidst these challenges, Ukraine has accused Russia of using banned chemical weapons, specifically riot control gases, in violation of international law. A recent report by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) confirmed the presence of these banned substances on the battlefield, further complicating the already dire situation. Ukraine’s foreign ministry called out Russia for its blatant disregard for global conventions, urging the international community to act.
On the front lines, Ukrainian forces continue to face heavy fighting near key cities like Kupiansk and Pokrovsk. Meanwhile, in the Kursk region, Ukrainian forces are struggling to maintain control as Russia reportedly assembles around 50,000 troops, including forces from North Korea, to intensify their efforts to regain lost ground.
As the war enters its 1,000th day, Ukraine remains steadfast in its resolve, despite mounting losses and challenges, while Russia continues to push its military objectives and threaten the use of more destructive means, including nuclear weapons.
