NEW DELHI: Om Birla, a three-time MP from the BJP, has been re-elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha, defeating Congress' eight-time MP Kodikunnil Suresh from Kerala's Mavelikara constituency in Wednesday's election.

This electoral contest marks a significant event, being the first of its kind in 48 years. The Opposition had earlier criticized the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), alleging a lack of cooperation by denying them the Deputy Speaker's position.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi moved the motion to elect Om Birla to the prestigious position, which was adopted by a voice vote, with the pro-tem Speaker confirming the decision with a resounding 'Ayes' vote.

Following his election, Om Birla received commendation from Prime Minister Modi, who praised his leadership during his previous term as Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that Birla's experience and guidance will steer the House towards progress and success in the coming term.
