The auto industry in India is constantly changing, and now new technology is coming into toll collection as well. The government has planned to introduce Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to replace the traditional methods of toll collection.
GNSS is a satellite based system, which will include a satellite unit to be installed in vehicles. With the help of this system, the authorities will be able to easily track when the vehicle used the toll road and when it left. As soon as the vehicle exits the toll road, the system will automatically calculate the toll amount and get the payment done.
Currently, GNSS technology is being tested on two major highways in India:
The government has not yet announced the official launch date of this technology, but as soon as the tests are successful, it will be implemented in a phased manner. The introduction of this new technology will help in making the toll payment process simple and transparent, which will also provide relief to the commuters.
