KOHIMA: Neiphiu Rio, the head of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), was sworn in as the fifth chief minister of Nagaland on Tuesday, March 7, 2023.

Governor La Ganesan, BJP President JP Nadda and Assam Chief Minster Himanta Biswa Sarma witness the oath-taking ceremony in Kohima. Taditui Rangkau Zeliang and Yanthungo Patton took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers of Nagaland in Kohima.

According to information provided by the Indian Election Commission, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party and Bharatiya Janata Party, the state's current government, regained control of Nagaland after winning 37 seats in the 60-member assembly (ECI).

By a huge margin of 15,824 votes, Rio defeated Seyievilie Sachu of the Congress to win the Northern Angami-II Assembly constituency. He received a total of 17,045 votes, or 92.87 percent of all the votes cast in the race.

Significantly, Nagaland wrote its own chapter in history when it chose its first female MPs in its 60 years as a state. The state, which has had 13 Assemblies thus far, never had a woman MLA before March 2nd result.

Hekhani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse, two female parliamentarians from the governing NDPP, defeated the incumbent MLAs in the Western Angami and Dimapur-III seats, respectively.

The Northeast state witnessed a triangular contest as Congress and CPIM, which have been arch rivals for years, stitched a pre-election alliance to defeat the ruling Bharatiya Janata party.
