Kolkatta: In the aftermath of the COVID-19 outbreak, the West Bengal government plans to introduce an open-air classroom initiative called Paray Shikshalaya (Neighbourhood Schools) for primary and pre-primary students on February 7.

P Ulaganathan, the District Magistrate of South 24 Parganas, said, "Children are being denied a proper education as a result of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. We have now decided to hold sessions in open ground as part of the 'Paray Shikshalaya' programme. The project would include paraprofessionals and primary school teachers who would deliver elementary education to students in grades 1 through 5. The state administration has given its approval to the project."

Apart from elementary schooling, pupils will be encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as painting, according to the DM. The state administration has agreed to offer kids at 'Paray Shikshalaya' with mid-day meals. "The Information and Culture department of the South 24 Parganas District is working hard to make this project a success," the DM stated.

Meanwhile, after being banned for a month due to an increase in COVID-19 instances, West Bengal resumed offline sessions for classes 8-12 on Thursday.
