On Sunday, a key closed-door meeting on the matter of AFSPA repeal was conducted at the house of Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, NPF leader TR Zeliang, Nagaland Home Secretary Abhijit Sinha, DGP John Longkumer, extra Chief Secretary and Finance Secretary were also present at the meeting. The Nagaland Chief Minister convened the meeting to inform the state's bureaucracy about the specifics of a recent meeting between a group of Naga political leaders and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

On December 23, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, and NPF leader TR Zeliang met with Amit Shah in New Delhi, joined by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, to explore the possibility of lifting AFSPA from Nagaland and the Northeast. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio told the media that Amit Shah had guaranteed the delegation that a high-level committee will be formed to look into the possibility of removing AFSPA from Nagaland.

"The five-member committee will be led by MHA's additional secretary (Northeast) and would include Nagaland's chief secretary, DGP, IGR North, and a CRPF representative," NPF leader TR Zeliang told this reporter. The commandos of the 21 Para special forces who were part in the bungled counter-insurgency operation and killed innocent Naga residents would be suspended, according to Zeliang.

"The people's demand is clear: abolish AFSPA. And we're working hard to achieve it. However, removing the statute would take time since it must be approved by both chambers of Parliament," Zeliang remarked Meanwhile, the union home ministry is expected to look into the prospect of partially lifting the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Nagaland and other Northeast states, according to sources.

Although most officials in the Northeast agree that AFSPA should be repealed, Assam's chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has voted to keep the 'draconian' law in place in his state. If the AFSPA were to be partially lifted, Shah allegedly informed Rio and the others that the details would have to be worked out, and the state police would have to take on greater duties in ensuring peace and order.
