A mild earthquake of magnitude 3.2 struck Gujarat’s Kutch district on Wednesday morning, causing no damage to life or property. The tremor was part of an ongoing series of seismic activities in the region, known for its earthquake-prone nature.

The Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) in Gandhinagar reported that the tremor occurred at 10:24 AM, with its epicentre located 23 kilometres north-northeast of Bhachau. Local authorities confirmed that no casualties or structural damages were reported in the aftermath.

A Region Prone to Earthquakes

Kutch, situated in a high-risk seismic zone, has a history of significant earthquakes. Data from the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) indicates that the state has experienced nine major earthquakes in the past two centuries.

The devastating earthquake on January 26, 2001, remains one of the most catastrophic events in Indian history. Measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, it caused widespread destruction across towns and villages in Kutch, claiming nearly 13,800 lives and leaving over 1.67 lakh people injured.

Recent Seismic Activities

In recent months, Kutch has recorded several tremors. Last month alone, the district experienced four seismic events of magnitudes greater than 3. These included a 3.2 magnitude quake three days ago, with an epicentre near Bhachau, and a 3.7 magnitude tremor on December 23. Additionally, on November 18 last year, an earthquake of magnitude 4 struck the region.

Other parts of Gujarat have also felt tremors. On November 15, an earthquake measuring 4.2 shook the Patan district in North Gujarat.

Preparedness in Focus - The frequency of such tremors underscores the importance of preparedness in Gujarat. Authorities and local bodies continue to emphasize disaster management and awareness to minimize the impact of seismic activities in the future.

The Biggest Earthquake- 2001

The catastrophic earthquake that struck Kutch, Gujarat, on January 26, 2001, continues to be one of the most devastating natural disasters in India’s history. With a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, it was the third- largest earthquake to hit India and the second most destructive in the country over the past two centuries. The tremors were felt in multiple states, but Kutch, the epicenter, bore the brunt of the devastation.
