Shillong: The Opposition Congress in Meghalaya has demanded a state human rights commission (MHRC) probe into the death of a dreaded militant in an encounter with police. It may be recalled that Former General Secretary of the banned organization Hynavtrap National Liberation Council (HNLC) Chesterfield Thangkhiew surrendered in 2018 and was killed in an encounter with police outside Thangkhiew's house in Mawlai on Friday morning.
Three days ago, HNLC had IED blasted the busy market area of the city. Congress secretary and former minister Amparin Lyngdoh said in a statement, "Citizens have leveled serious allegations about the police action. The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission should conduct an independent and impartial inquiry into this to confirm the actual necessary facts from both the police and the victim's family. It cannot be biased given the general public.''
He said the murder 'in the style of encounter' has angered the public and sparked debate over ways to deal with the suspected case. Terming the incident as 'unfortunate,' the Congress leader said, 'This incident cannot confuse us with the heinous attacks on civilians by HNLC and Meghalaya police must arrest an accused as per law.'
