Pitru Paksha is a time when we pay tribute to our ancestors. This 15-day period, which will start from 18 September 2024 and will continue till 2 October 2024, is to remember the ancestors and perform special rituals for the peace of their souls. During this time, people perform religious acts like Shradh, Pinddaan and Tarpan for their ancestors.

What is Tarpan?: Tarpan means offering water. According to astrologer Anish Vyas, water, milk, sesame and kusha are offered to the ancestors in Tarpan. This work can be done on any day of Pitru Paksha. In this, ancestors, gods and sages are satisfied with water mixed with sesame. It is believed that ancestors are satisfied with this and give blessings.

What is Pind Daan?: Pind Daan is considered most important for the liberation of the soul of ancestors. It means that food should be offered to the ancestors so that their soul gets peace. Through Pind Daan, the soul of the ancestors gets free from attachment and illusion and moves towards its next journey. Gaya Ji is considered the most sacred place to perform this ritual, although Pind Daan is also performed at places like Haridwar, Chitrakoot, Pushkar.

What is Shraddha?: Shraddha is an elaborate ritual in which pinddaan, havan, food and donations are performed by Brahmins. It is said to be the path to salvation for the ancestors. During Shraddha, the Shraddha performer has to follow various rules, such as offering Panchbali, in which food is given to cow, crow, dog, deity and ants.
