THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Arif Mohammed Khan, the governor of Kerala, slammed Gopinath Ravindran, the vice chancellor of Kannur University, on Saturday over suspicions of nepotism. He also promised that soon an inquiry will be conducted to look into all appointments made to various universities.

Khan has been challenging the university administration and the state's ruling Left government since since allegations of irregularities in the appointment of Priya Varghese as an associate professor at Kannur University arose.

Priya is the wife of former CPI-M Rajya Sabha member K.K. Raghesh, who serves as Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's private secretary at the moment. "The VC has made every effort to win over the ruling party. Now that it is known that Priya was given preference over other applicants with higher scores, "the governor said.

Interestingly, the interview to choose Priya took place just a few days before Ravindran was set to retire last year. Ravindran received an extension sooon after the interview, which is unusual.

We need to put a stop to this because people's money cannot be wasted in this manner, he said. 
"Starting from the lowest post to the highest, appointments are being made to Universities and I will soon launch a full-fledged investigation into this," said Khan who seems to be in no mood to relent.
