BANGALORE: Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge are scheduled to be present in Mysuru today as the Karnataka state government, under Congress rule, prepares to launch the 'Gruha Lakshmi' scheme. This initiative stands as one of the five electoral promises put forth by the Congress party during their campaign period.
The official unveiling of the scheme will take place at a public event in Mysuru, graced by the participation of the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, along with other prominent leaders from the party. Rahul Gandhi, the former president of the Congress party, will also be in attendance alongside Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, both contributing to the inauguration of this scheme.
Essentially, the 'Gruha Lakshmi' scheme aims to extend a helping hand to families living below the poverty line. The state government intends to provide a monthly assistance of Rs 2,000 to the women who serve as the heads of these households. KC Venugopal, the General Secretary of Congress, has referred to this endeavor as the "largest-ever welfare scheme for women" on a global scale. In his words, "Through this groundbreaking scheme, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's administration, Karnataka will be granting Rs 2,000 to 1.28 crore women. Empowering women strengthens India," as he shared in a post on X.
Starting today, approximately 1.28 crore women heading families in Karnataka are expected to begin receiving this financial aid, which will be directly deposited into their bank accounts. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah affirmed on Tuesday that his government holds the unwavering determination to fulfill the five guarantees pledged to the people of the state by the Congress party. These guarantees, collectively, are projected to incur an annual cost of around Rs 50,000 crore to the state treasury.
During its election campaign earlier this year, the Congress party in Karnataka had unveiled these five major guarantees as part of their platform. The guarantees encompass: the provision of 200 units of free electricity to all households (Gruha Jyoti); a monthly stipend of Rs 2,000 to the female heads of families (Gruha Lakshmi); the distribution of 10 kg of rice to each member of households classified as below the poverty line (Anna Bhagya); a monthly allowance of Rs 3,000 to unemployed college graduates and Rs 1,500 to unemployed diploma holders (both falling in the age bracket of 18 to 25) for a span of two years (Yuva Nidhi); and the facilitation of free travel for women on public transportation buses (Uchita Prayana).
