BANGALORE: The Karnataka Government has rolled out its new Cyber Security Policy 2024 aimed at tackling the increasing threat of cybercrime and enhancing digital security across the state. Announced on Thursday, the policy seeks to bolster awareness, develop skills, and foster public-private partnerships to safeguard Karnataka’s digital infrastructure.

The policy outlines several key areas of focus, including raising awareness and education, enhancing skill development, promoting industry and startups, and building collaborative partnerships for capacity strengthening. "With the growing significance of cyber security, Karnataka has designed this policy to ensure a robust and secure digital environment for both citizens and businesses," stated Priyank Kharge, the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, as well as Information Technology and Biotechnology, at the launch event.

Kharge emphasized that the policy aligns with both national and international standards, showcasing Karnataka’s proactive approach to addressing cyber threats. The policy is divided into two main sections. The first aims to create a strong cyber security ecosystem involving public institutions, academia, industry, startups, and government bodies. The second part focuses on enhancing the cyber security of the state’s IT infrastructure.

While the first section will be publicly accessible, the second section will be reserved for internal use by the state's IT departments and teams. The policy has been developed in collaboration with the Department of Electronics, IT, BT, and S&T, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (e-Governance), and the Home Department, with input from both governmental and private sector stakeholders.

Additionally, the Indian Institute of Science, a key player in the state's K-tech Centre of Excellence for Cyber Security (CySecK), reviewed the policy. The launch also featured a new skilling initiative in partnership with network giant CISCO. "Our collaboration with CISCO reflects our dedication to creating a secure digital landscape. By training 40,000 individuals, particularly focusing on empowering women, we aim to bridge the skills gap and promote inclusivity in the tech sector," Kharge added.
