Bangalore (Karnataka): The Karnataka State Assembly has made alterations to the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act 2022, now requiring that 60 percent of the names on signs of government-approved entities be written in Kannada.

The recent change to the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act 2022 covers a wide array of establishments, such as businesses, factories, and service providers, as well as trusts, clinics, hospitals, labs, entertainment venues, and hotels. All these organizations, operating under government or local authority approval, must now have 60 percent of their name displayed in Kannada on their signs.

Additionally, the amendment specifies that Kannada must be prominently placed at the top of the sign. This action aims to encourage the use of the local language in both public and private sectors.

"The amendment to the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act 2022 (Karnataka Act 13 of 2023) is necessary to designate the Director of the Directorate of Kannada and Culture as a member and the Secretary of the Kannada Development Authority as the convener of the State Level Committee. It also ensures that commercial, industrial, and business entities, as well as trusts, clinics, hospitals, labs, entertainment venues, and hotels approved by the government or local authorities, must display 60% of their name in Kannada on their signs, with Kannada being displayed in the upper half of the sign. Therefore, the Bill," according to the Karnataka State Assembly.
