Vice President Kamala Harris made a bold statement during a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, telling potential intruders, "If somebody breaks in my house, they're getting shot." The remark came as the conversation shifted to gun laws during the live event.
Following the comment, Harris joked, "I probably should not have said that. But my staff will deal with that later," laughing before moving on. Harris, who receives protection from the U.S. Secret Service, made the statement amid growing concerns over political violence. Recently, there was a second attempted assassination of her opponent in the upcoming presidential election, Donald Trump.
While Harris supports the Second Amendment, which ensures the right to gun ownership, she also advocates for tighter gun control. Her proposals include banning assault weapons, implementing stricter background checks, and supporting "red flag" laws that temporarily restrict gun access for individuals considered dangerous. On the other hand, her opponent, Trump, favors fewer restrictions on arms and ammunition.
Harris first mentioned her status as a gun owner in 2019 while serving as a U.S. senator, and she reiterated it during a recent debate with Trump, seemingly in an effort to appeal to more conservative voters. According to a source familiar with the matter, Harris owns a handgun for personal safety, which is securely stored in her California home. The type of gun was not disclosed, but it is believed to be the same firearm she referenced during her 2019 campaign.
As a former prosecutor and California attorney general, Harris has long been familiar with the debate around gun control. In 2019, she explained her ownership, saying, "I am a gun owner, and I own a gun for probably the reason a lot of people do—for personal safety. I was a career prosecutor."
According to Pew Research, about one-third of Americans own a gun, while nearly two-thirds of the population support stricter gun laws. Additionally, around 90% of Americans are in favor of measures that would prevent mentally ill individuals from obtaining firearms.
