Guna, Madhya Pradesh: In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia emerged victorious in the Guna constituency, defeating Congress candidate Yadvendra Rao Deshraj Singh. This win further cements the Scindia family's longstanding influence in the region.
As of 2:15pm, Scindia was leading by a substantial margin of 477774 votes.
Jyotiraditya Scindia's journey in Guna has seen its share of ups and downs. In the 2019 elections, running as a Congress candidate, he lost to BJP's Krishna Pal Singh by 10.65%. Despite this loss, the Scindia family’s political legacy in Guna remains strong. His grandmother, Vijaya Raje Scindia, represented the area as a BJP member from 1989 to 1998. His father also held the seat as a Congress member from 1971 to 1980 and again in 1999 until his passing in 2001.
Following his father's death, Jyotiraditya entered politics, winning a 2002 by-election against BJP's Desh Singh Yadav. He maintained his position through successive elections in 2004, 2009, and 2014, serving in various ministerial roles including telecommunications, commerce and industry, and power.
In 2020, a significant shift occurred when Scindia and 22 supporting MLAs left Congress for the BJP, resulting in a change of state government. This move led to his appointment to the Rajya Sabha and later, the position of Union Minister for Civil Aviation, a role once held by his father.
The Congress had briefly taken control of Madhya Pradesh under Kamal Nath in 2018, but this tenure lasted only fifteen months. Scindia's defection played a crucial role in returning the state to BJP control. His latest victory in Guna underscores his political influence and the enduring legacy of the Scindia family in the area.
