Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is set to establish three new centers for the study of Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist religions. The university has issued a notification regarding the establishment of these centers, which will be part of the School of Sanskrit and Indian Studies.
The decision to establish these centers was approved by the Executive Council of the university on May 29. The centers will offer master's and PhD programs, with admission to be based on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). The programs are expected to begin in the next academic session, with 20 seats available in each center.
The establishment of these centers is part of JNU's efforts to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and promote Indian knowledge systems. The university had set up a committee to explore ways to implement the NEP and promote Indian knowledge systems, which recommended the establishment of these centers.
The programs offered by these centers will be designed to integrate traditional Indian knowledge with modern subjects such as computer science, information science, commerce, and political science. The MA program in Hindu Studies, which was launched by Delhi University last year, is a similar initiative that aims to promote the study of Hindu philosophy and its relevance in modern times.
Students from any stream with a graduation degree can apply for admission to these programs. The MA program in Hindu Studies at Delhi University has 60 seats available.
The establishment of these centers at JNU is a significant development in the field of Indian studies and is expected to promote a deeper understanding of Indian philosophy and culture. The programs offered by these centers will provide students with a unique opportunity to explore the rich cultural heritage of India and its relevance in modern times.
