ISRO Collaborates with Stakeholders for Advanced Microgravity Research to Boost Healthcare

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is in discussions with various stakeholders to explore groundbreaking microgravity research, which could significantly advance vaccine development and diagnostic technologies, according to S. Somanath, the Chairman of ISRO and Secretary of the Department of Space.

At the Raksha Summit 2024, Somanath shared that ISRO is engaging with pharmaceutical companies, healthcare institutions, and research organizations to collaborate on space-based experiments in microgravity, a unique field with immense potential for medical breakthroughs. "We are in talks with multiple stakeholders to leverage space-based experiments, particularly in microgravity research, which could have a big impact on medical advancements," he said.

Microgravity, which can only be experienced in space, causes biological processes to change in ways that are difficult to replicate on Earth. This creates a unique environment for developing vaccines and diagnostic tools. ISRO’s efforts are aimed at using this environment to accelerate the development of vaccines and treatments, improving healthcare outcomes with greater speed and precision.

Somanath emphasized the importance of using space research to address critical health challenges on Earth. "Microgravity helps us understand biological processes better, and we believe this knowledge can lead to faster and more effective healthcare solutions," he said.

India faces numerous healthcare challenges, particularly in providing adequate services to its vast population of over 1.6 billion people, with rural areas being especially underserved. ISRO is working to tackle these challenges by supporting healthcare initiatives in both rural and urban settings. As India’s urban population grows, there is an increasing need to develop robust healthcare infrastructure to meet the demands of both urban and rural residents.

A major hurdle for India’s healthcare system is the lack of comprehensive health data. Somanath noted that efforts are underway to build a national health database, including large-scale genomic studies, which will help improve healthcare delivery and policy decisions. "Having access to real-time health data across the country is essential for addressing both infectious and non-communicable diseases," he added.

Telemedicine is another area where ISRO is making strides. The agency's telemedicine program has been instrumental in bridging the healthcare gap between rural areas and expert hospitals in urban centers. "Satellite connectivity remains crucial for telemedicine, especially in remote and border regions where internet access is limited. This technology is key to ensuring that healthcare reaches underserved populations," said Somanath.

In addition to telemedicine, ISRO is supporting research into miniaturized diagnostic tools, which could make healthcare more accessible and affordable, particularly for people in rural areas. Institutions like the Indian Institute of Science are developing low-cost diagnostic devices capable of conducting rapid tests and diagnosing multiple diseases, potentially transforming healthcare delivery during pandemics or widespread disease outbreaks.

Space research has also contributed to advances in medical technology. Techniques developed for space missions have led to innovations such as improved CPR methods, medical implants made from titanium and ceramics, and more efficient diagnostic tools. By combining space research with healthcare initiatives, Somanath believes ISRO can help drive new solutions for emergency healthcare, including the development of intelligent prosthetics and heart-assist devices.

Through its ongoing collaborations and innovative use of space research, ISRO is paving the way for significant advancements in healthcare, especially in underserved regions, and helping create a healthier future for India.
