Israel has released video footage showing Yahya Sinwar, the former Hamas leader, moving his belongings to a tunnel in Gaza just hours before the October 7 attacks last year. The footage was revealed following his death in Rafah during a firefight. Sinwar was killed after being trapped in a heavily damaged building.
The video shows Sinwar, along with his family, relocating items like a television, water, pillows, and mattresses into a tunnel beneath their home in Khan Younis. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, an Israeli army spokesperson, provided details about the underground tunnel, which reportedly contained essentials like toilets, showers, and a kitchen. Israeli forces also found food, cash, and documents during the raid.
In response, Hamas refuted Israel’s claims, saying Sinwar died fighting bravely in battle and labeled the statements from Israel as “blatant lies.”
Earlier footage captured Sinwar gravely injured in his final moments, throwing an object at a drone before he was killed by a gunshot wound to the head. The footage circulated widely on social media, showing his last moments, which sparked different reactions. In Israel, it was seen as a symbol of victory, while in the Arab world, Sinwar was hailed as a martyr.
In Gaza, reactions to Sinwar’s death were mixed. Some mourned his loss, while others hoped his death might bring an end to the conflict he played a significant role in starting. Israeli forces, meanwhile, distributed leaflets in southern Gaza with images of Sinwar’s lifeless body, describing him as a coward who died trying to escape.
Despite calls from US President Joe Biden to use Sinwar’s death as an opportunity to negotiate the release of hostages, tensions remain high, with a recent attempted drone attack on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence further complicating ceasefire discussions.
