India has initiated ‘Operation Sadbhav’ to provide humanitarian aid to Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam, which have been severely affected by a major typhoon, according to an official statement.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced that 10 tonnes of aid, including dry rations, clothing, and medicines, were sent to Myanmar aboard the Indian naval ship INS Satpura. Additionally, a C-130J military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force is delivering 35 tonnes of aid to Vietnam and 10 tonnes to Laos.

On X, Jaishankar highlighted the aid effort: “India launches #OperationSadbhav. Demonstrating our solidarity with the people affected by Typhoon Yagi, India is dispatching aid to Myanmar, Vietnam, and Laos.”

Jaishankar detailed the aid packages, stating: “10 tons of aid including dry rations, clothing, and medicines have left for Myanmar onboard INS Satpura today. @IAF_MCC is carrying 35 tons of aid including water purification items, water containers, blankets, kitchen utensils, and solar lanterns for Vietnam. Another 10 tons of aid comprising gensets, water purification items, hygiene supplies, mosquito nets, blankets, and sleeping bags are heading to Laos.”

The Indian Navy has mobilized rapidly to deploy humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in response to the devastating floods in Myanmar. The Eastern Naval Command, in coordination with the Eastern Fleet and other units, completed the overnight loading of aid onto a naval warship bound for Yangon from Visakhapatnam.

Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal noted, “This rapid mobilisation, despite the short notice, showcases the Navy’s ability to swiftly respond to humanitarian crises in the region.”

Typhoon Yagi, which is considered Asia’s most powerful storm of the year, has caused massive flooding in Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam. The storm, which originated from the South China Sea, made landfall over a week ago and has resulted in over 170 fatalities in Vietnam and around 40 in Myanmar.
