New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert for West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall on Sunday. Additionally, an 'orange' alert has been raised for Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar, predicting very heavy rainfall.

According to the IMD bulletin, the forecast for September 15 includes light to moderate rainfall across most areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in parts of Gangetic West Bengal and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas of south Gangetic West Bengal. On September 16, the region can anticipate heavy rainfall in isolated places, while light to moderate rainfall will continue with heavy rainfall in isolated spots in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

In Odisha, light to moderate rainfall is anticipated at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at some locations and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas of north Odisha on September 15. The forecast for September 16 includes heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, with continued heavy rainfall in isolated locations on September 17.

Jharkhand is expected to experience light to moderate rainfall across most areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places and extremely heavy rainfall over southern parts of the state from September 15 to 17.

For Bihar, East Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, the IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall at most locations, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated spots between September 15 and 17.

The IMD has warned of potential localised flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and disruptions in urban traffic due to the extreme weather conditions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the north Bay of Bengal until Monday, and the public is urged to avoid waterlogged areas and check for traffic conditions before traveling.

The extreme weather is attributed to a deep depression over Gangetic West Bengal, which is expected to move westward and weaken into a depression over the next 24 hours. The deep depression, currently centered near Kolkata, is likely to persist as a deep depression until Sunday evening before gradually weakening.

A 'yellow' alert has also been issued for northeastern states, with forecasts of heavy rainfall in Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, and Meghalaya on September 15 and 16.
