MUMBAI: In a remarkable achievement, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has ascended to a prominent position among the world's top 150 universities, claiming the highest rank in India according to the latest Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings from the UK. This noteworthy milestone was announced on Wednesday.

IIT-B has exhibited remarkable progress, advancing from its previous position of 172 to an impressive rank of 149 this year, marking its inaugural inclusion within the prestigious Top 150. Garnering an overall score of 51.7/100, the institute has surpassed expectations by elevating its standing by 23 places. In the forthcoming 2024 edition, it will be ranked among the top 10 percent of the world's most esteemed 1,500 universities that have undergone comprehensive evaluation.

This commendable accomplishment signifies the first time in eight years that an Indian higher education institution has secured a place within the coveted top 10 percent. In 2016, the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru had attained a commendable rank of No. 147.

While IIT-B has soared to new heights, the esteemed IISc witnessed a decline from 155 to 225. Similarly, IIT-Delhi dropped from 174 to 197, IIT-Kanpur descended from 264 to 278, and IIT-Madras fell from 250 to 285. Conversely, IIT-Guwahati displayed improvement by progressing from 384 to 364, while IIT-Roorkee maintained its position at 369.

The impressive performance of IIT-B is evident in various domains, with notable scores of 81.9 in employer reputation, 73.1 in citation per faculty, 55.5 in academic reputation, 47.4 in employment outcome, 54.9 in sustainability, 18.9 in faculty-student ratio, 4.7 in international faculty, 8.5 in international research network, and 1.4 in international students. These scores reflect the institute's dedication and achievement, with each parameter measured on a scale of 100 points. Notably, IIT-B's employer reputation stood out, securing a commendable global rank of 69.

Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, the Director of IIT-Bombay, emphasized the institute's unwavering commitment to excellence in teaching and research. He stated that their focus lies in providing a conducive environment and infrastructure that empowers their students and faculty to achieve unparalleled success. The attainment of a higher rank is viewed as a byproduct rather than the ultimate goal. Professor Chaudhuri expressed confidence that IIT-B still has vast potential to explore and miles to go on its transformative journey.
