The troubles of Anubhav Sinha's web series 'IC-814 The Kandahar Hijack' and Netflix are increasing day by day. First the series had to face allegations of hurting Hindu sentiments, and now a new controversy has also started. The media has filed a case of copyright and trademark infringement against this series and Netflix in the Delhi High Court. ANI has alleged that their footage has been used in the series without license. In particular, footage of the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, General Pervez Musharraf, and terrorist Masood Azhar has been used without permission. ANI said in the petition that their content has been used in four episodes of the show.
Court action: The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to Netflix and the show's producers during the hearing of the case. Justice Mini Pushkarna heard the case on Monday and ordered Netflix, Matchbox Shots and Banaras Mediaworks to respond within two days. The court is now going to hear the case next on Friday.
There has been controversy before: The 'IC-814 The Kandahar Hijack' series was also in controversy at the time of its release. It was alleged that the names of the hijackers in the series are Bhola and Shankar, which do not match the real names. After this, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting summoned the Vice President of Netflix. As a result, Netflix decided to add a disclaimer with the real names in the series.
Names of real hijackers: Reports say that the story of this series is based on the hijacking of Indian Airlines plane IC 814 in 1999. This plane flew from Nepal and was taken to Kandahar in Afghanistan via Amritsar, Lahore and UAE. This plane was hijacked by five terrorists. These terrorists used code names to talk to each other in the plane. The code names were Doctor, Burger, Bhola, Shankar, and Chief. The same names have been used in the series as well, but the real names were: Ibrahim Athar, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Zahoor Ibrahim, Shahid Akhtar, and Syed Shakir.
