In a bid to saffronise school education or to restore its past glory, the Himachal Pradesh School Education Board (HPSEB) will introduce Sanskrit from Class III and Vedic mathematics from Class VI from this session.
In addition, the state intends to begin teaching the Bhagvad Gita as a topic to pupils in grades I through II beginning next year. Critics believe that instead of giving a decent education based on polishing knowledge in English, maths, and science, this is simply an attempt to saffronise brains at a young age.
State Education Minister Govind Thakur, on the other hand, believes that adding literature on values is a good idea. The goal is to raise cultural awareness among the kids. "The Bhagvad Gita will be taught in Sanskrit and Hindi in schools. Sanskrit would also be taught starting in Class III because it is rich in language, literature, and morals "he stated
Thakur's declaration follows Gujarat's announcement that the Bhagvad Gita will be included in the school curriculum for grades 6 through 12 this year.
Suresh Kumar Soni, chairman of the HPSEB, said the board has developed a syllabus for teaching Sanskrit and Vedic mathematics in all government and board-affiliated schools.
He said that teaching the Bhagvad Gita will take time. In the board schools, Class III students number around 1.50 lakh, while Class VI students number around 1.25 lakh. Sanskrit will be taught in primary schools for the first time in the country by the HPSEB.
