New York: Elon Musk, the world's richest individual, has emerged as a key supporter of Donald Trump and a focal point for the Republican's campaign efforts. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, known for his ambitious plans for human colonies on Mars and his influential role in various tech and science ventures, has been actively campaigning alongside Trump.

In an unexpected alliance, Musk, a known skeptic of climate change, and Trump, who has often criticized electric vehicles, appear to share a mutual admiration. Trump frequently praises Musk’s technological innovations, particularly his successful rocket landings, despite his own negative comments about electric cars, which have benefitted from significant tax incentives under President Joe Biden’s administration.

Recently, Trump announced plans to appoint Musk as the head of a proposed Department of Government Efficiency, aimed at slashing federal spending. At a recent rally, Musk claimed he could reduce the government’s $6.5 trillion budget by $2 trillion.

Democrats view Musk as a symbol of billionaires’ influence over government, arguing that his policies could adversely affect middle and lower-income Americans while diminishing social programs. Musk, who purchased Twitter for around $45 billion in 2022 and rebranded it as X, reinstated Trump after his ban and relaxed restrictions on content in the name of free speech. This move has sparked protests, with many users threatening to leave the platform, yet it remains a powerful tool for both political messaging and misinformation.

Musk is betting that if Harris wins, the extensive government contracts held by his companies in sectors like space, defense, and climate initiatives would be difficult to dismantle. To support Trump’s campaign, Musk has pledged $200 million to a political action committee he founded called America PAC, utilizing a legal loophole to ensure no direct connection to Trump. The committee is organizing grassroots campaigns, voter registration drives, and advertising efforts in favor of Trump while opposing Harris.

Known for his high-energy presence, Musk has held rallies in Pennsylvania, a crucial state for the upcoming election, blending politics with themes of advanced science and artificial intelligence. One of his controversial strategies includes a lottery for voters in key swing states, offering a daily prize of $1 million to those who publicly support the Constitution, a move Democrats have labeled as potentially illegal. President Biden called the initiative “totally inappropriate,” while the Justice Department has warned Musk that it could violate election laws.

Biden has also accused Musk of being an illegal immigrant himself, citing his early work in the U.S. on a student visa, despite Musk claiming he transitioned to an H-1B work visa. A report revealing Musk's alleged regular communications with Russian President Vladimir Putin has drawn criticism, prompting NASA's administrator to call for an investigation, given Musk’s government contracts.

Musk’s SpaceX holds a significant NASA contract under the Artemis program, aiming to send astronauts around the moon next year and land them by 2026. However, the California Coastal Commission recently rejected SpaceX's request to increase its rocket launch frequency, leading Musk to file a lawsuit alleging political motivations behind the decision.

Both Musk and Trump advocate for laissez-faire capitalism and a reduction in government intervention, even as they benefit from it. They share personal similarities as well, each having been married three times, facing sexual harassment lawsuits, and gaining notoriety for their controversial remarks.
