Los Angeles:

On Sunday, Vice President Kamala Harris embarked on a crucial campaign swing through Pennsylvania, a key battleground state, just a day before the Democratic National Convention. This trip is part of her strategy to consolidate support and energize voters ahead of her nomination acceptance in Chicago. As Harris prepares to make her case to the nation, former President Donald Trump is also gearing up for his own campaign push. Trump is focusing on key states to present his vision for America's future, intensifying the race as both political heavyweights vie for influence and voter approval in this critical election cycle.

In 2010, Kamala Harris faced an uphill battle in her campaign for California Attorney General. The Tea Party movement was at its height, and Harris, a newcomer to statewide politics, was struggling to distance herself from the "San Francisco liberal" label—a tag that her opponents, including Donald Trump, used to their advantage.

At 45, Harris was considered a rising star in the Democratic Party, often compared to "the female Barack Obama" by commentators like Gwen Ifill. However, she was up against a strong Republican contender, Steve Cooley, the popular and moderate district attorney of Los Angeles County. Cooley's reputation for tackling corruption had given him a slight edge over Harris as they approached October, thanks to his remarkable popularity in the Democratic stronghold of Los Angeles.

By early October, with her campaign running low on both time and funds, Harris faced Cooley in their only debate. It was here that a seemingly minor moment would turn out to be pivotal.

During the debate, Cooley made a candid, controversial statement that would ultimately become a turning point. When asked if he planned to "double-dip" by collecting both a pension and a salary as Attorney General, Cooley responded affirmatively, stating that his pension would supplement the low salary of the Attorney General position. His blunt honesty about the potential for earning over $400,000 a year shocked many.

The debate, held at a modest venue and not widely televised, could have been a footnote in the campaign. But the fallout from Cooley's response would soon become a major factor. His answer was viewed by many as out of touch, and it quickly became a focal point of Harris' campaign strategy.

Harris' team, recognizing the opportunity, swiftly created a powerful ad highlighting Cooley's statement. The ad, featuring just the question and Cooley's answer with dramatic music, was designed to capitalize on the public's reaction to his tone-deaf remark. Despite their campaign being financially strained, they invested almost all their remaining funds into airing this ad in Los Angeles.

The strategy paid off. The ad was seen by many, and it had a significant impact on the election's outcome. Harris, who had been trailing in polls, surged ahead, capturing the votes she needed. By election night, Cooley had prematurely declared victory, only for the results to eventually swing in Harris' favor after a tense three-week wait.

Harris' victory by less than 0.85% of the vote was one of the closest statewide wins in California history. Cooley’s defeat was partially attributed to the double-dipping controversy and the collapse of the broader Republican ticket.

Reflecting on the campaign, Harris’ chief strategist, Averell "Ace" Smith, noted that her victory was far from guaranteed. Republican strategist Chris Jankowski admitted that had Harris lost, her political career might have taken a very different path.

Now, as Harris makes history by seeking the presidency at the Democratic National Convention, that fateful debate moment stands out as a crucial, yet often overlooked, juncture in her political journey. The debate, which took place in a small, practice courtroom and was not even broadcast live, proved to be a decisive factor in her rise to national prominence.
