In 2010, Kamala Harris faced an uphill battle in her campaign for California Attorney General. The Tea Party movement was at its height, and Harris, a newcomer to statewide politics, was struggling to distance herself from the "San Francisco liberal" label—a tag that her opponents, including Donald Trump, used to their advantage.
At 45, Harris was considered a rising star in the Democratic Party, often compared to "the female Barack Obama" by commentators like Gwen Ifill. However, she was up against a strong Republican contender, Steve Cooley, the popular and moderate district attorney of Los Angeles County. Cooley's reputation for tackling corruption had given him a slight edge over Harris as they approached October, thanks to his remarkable popularity in the Democratic stronghold of Los Angeles.
By early October, with her campaign running low on both time and funds, Harris faced Cooley in their only debate. It was here that a seemingly minor moment would turn out to be pivotal.

When asked if he planned to "double-dip" by collecting both a pension and a salary as Attorney General, Cooley responded affirmatively, stating that his pension would supplement the low salary of the Attorney General position.
