GST Council Meeting: Meeting of the GST Council After a break of almost six months, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council, which is presided over by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, will convene digitally by video conference on Saturday.
The GST on online gaming and casinos will probably be discussed at the GST Council Meeting because the Group of Ministers (GoM) gave the Finance Minister a report on the subject on Thursday. Conrad Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, chairs a group of state ministers that convened in November and decided to impose a 28% GST on horse racing, casinos, and online gaming.
Deliberations on other issues such as the creation of appellate tribunals, the decriminalisation of offences under the GST law, and measures to prevent tax evasion in pan masala and gutkha companies, are also likely to be on the agenda during the virtual conference.
The GST Council will also take a tax officers' report into account and provide clarification on the rates that apply to certain goods and services.
The Finance Ministry tweeted on Friday that the GST Council's 48th meeting would be held via video conference on December 17, 2022.
In its last meeting, the Council had raised GST on various items such LED lamps, solar water heaters etc. It had also hiked GST from 12% to 18% on tetra packs.
