New Delhi: The government has reportedly generated more than Rs 1,163 crore since October 2021, with a significant amount of Rs 557 crore earned during a month-long cleanliness drive in October. Approximately 96 lakh physical files have been discarded from central government offices since October 2021, leading to the liberation of over 355 lakh square feet of space. This initiative has resulted in cleaned office hallways and vacated spaces repurposed for recreational centers and other beneficial applications.
The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances has spearheaded this scrap clearance campaign. The Ministry of Railways emerged as a major contributor, bringing in about Rs 225 crore of the total Rs 556 crore earned in 2023. Other significant contributors include the Ministry of Defence at Rs 168 crore, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas at Rs 56 crore, and the Ministry of Coal at Rs 34 crore. The Ministry of Coal has freed the largest amount of space this year, totaling 66 lakh square feet.
In terms of files, approximately 24 lakh files were cleared out this year, with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Department of Military Affairs leading with 3.9 lakh and 3.15 lakh files, respectively. The government's overall e-file adoption rate has increased to over 96% as a result of the cleanliness program. The initiative covered around 2.58 lakh office sites this year.
V Srinivas, Secretary of the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, highlighted the success of the Special Campaign 3.0 in institutionalizing cleanliness and reducing pendency. The month-long campaign, conducted in 2,58,673 offices across India and abroad, resulted in the liberation of 164 lakh sq ft of office space and the disposal of 24.07 lakh physical files, earning revenues of Rs 556.35 crore from the sale of office scrap.
Srinivas emphasized that the Swachhata practices established during Special Campaign 3.0 will be institutionalized in the government, with three hours per week devoted to Swachhata activities.
