New Delhi: In light of Covid limitations in several regions of the country, the Supreme Court on Thursday rejected to postpone the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering Exam (GATE), which is set to take place on February 5.

According to a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and Vikram Nath, postponing GATE just 48 hours before the scheduled examination would cause chaos and uncertainty, and it might jeopardise the careers of students who had prepared for it.

The bench stated that the timing of the examination is a matter of academic policy, and that the court cannot intervene in this matter.

It was observed that nine lakh students are scheduled to take the exam, and that 20,000 students had joined an online petition asking for the exam to be postponed.

"The students have prepared for it, and the court cannot jeopardise the students' careers by delaying the examination," the bench stated. The top court decided to list the petition for a GATE postponement on Wednesday. According to the petition for a postponement of the exam, nine lakh pupils are scheduled to take the test at 200 locations, and the authorities have yet to publish any Covid-appropriate rules for conducting the exam.
