Chandigarh: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former two-time Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, dismissed rumors of meeting Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi as "baseless." He emphasized that the claims circulating on social media lacked any foundation of truth. Captain Amarinder Singh firmly stated his allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Party President JP Nadda. He affirmed his unwavering commitment to the BJP, noting that once a decision was made, it could not be reversed.
Amarinder Singh had parted ways with the Congress a year ago and subsequently established his own party, Punjab Lok Congress (PLC), which later merged with the BJP. His PLC contested the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections but did not secure any seats in the state. Meanwhile, tension has been brewing within the Punjab Congress since the formation of the INDIA alliance, which includes the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Opposition parties within the alliance are exploring the possibility of jointly contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections alongside the AAP to challenge the ruling BJP at the national level.
However, some leaders within the Punjab Congress have expressed reservations about aligning with the AAP in the state. Earlier this week, the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Pratap Singh Bajwa, conveyed that state leaders were reluctant to form an alliance with the AAP for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections.
