HYDERABAD: D Srinivas, a senior Congress leader and former president of the undivided Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, passed away on Saturday. He was 76 years old. His son, D Arvind, who is the Nizamabad MP, confirmed the news. According to family sources, Srinivas had been unwell for several days.
During his political career, Srinivas served as the PCC president during the 2004 and 2009 assembly and general elections. He also held a ministerial position in the cabinet of former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy.
In 2016, Srinivas left Congress and joined the BRS, serving as a Rajya Sabha Member until 2022. He later returned to Congress, where he spent his final years in politics.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, Telangana ministers, and senior Congress leaders have all expressed their condolences over Srinivas' passing.
Dharmapuri Srinivas was a notable Indian politician, serving as the former President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APPCC) and a three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). He was elected as an MLA in 1989, 1999, and 2004.
In the government of Chief Minister YS Rajashekhar Reddy, Srinivas held the position of Minister for Higher Education and Intermediate Education from 2004 to 2009. He also managed various other portfolios within the Andhra Pradesh State Cabinet. His efforts were instrumental in helping the Congress Party regain control of the government in both the 2004 and 2009 elections.
Srinivas was related to the former finance minister of Andhra Pradesh, Argul Rajaram, as his nephew. Despite his previous successes, he faced electoral defeats in 2009, 2010 (by-election), and 2012 to the BJP, and in 2014 to the BRS Party.
