AMARAVATI: Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) Chairman Damodar Gautam Sawang assumed office on Thursday.

Sawang met with Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy after taking over as chairman of the APPSC. On February 18, three days after being ousted as police chief, the Indian Police Service (IPS) officer was appointed to the new position.

The appointment was made under Articles 316 (1) and 316 (2) of the Indian Constitution by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. Following the exit of former chairman Uday Bhaskar, Sawang succeeded incharge chairman A V Ramana Reddy.

Sawang will serve as chairman of the APPSC for a six-year term. He will, nevertheless, be considered retired from IPS under APPSC standards. Many consider Sawang's new job as an honourable farewell and prolongation of service, as the 1986-batch IPS officer is set to retire in July next year.

On February 15, the Andhra Pradesh government shunted out Sawang as DGP and replaced him with Kasireddy V. R. N. Reddy. Until further orders, KVRN Reddy, Director General of Police (Intelligence), has been given complete additional command of the DGP (chief of police force).
