Mumbai: An elderly man was reportedly assaulted by fellow passengers on an express train near Igatpuri in Maharashtra's Nashik district, allegedly because they suspected he was carrying beef, according to the Government Railway Police (GRP).
The GRP has launched an investigation after a video of the incident, which occurred earlier this week, began circulating on social media. The footage depicts several individuals attacking and verbally abusing the man inside the train.
The victim, identified as Haji Ashraf Munyar from Jalgaon district, was on his way to his daughter's home in Kalyan when the altercation took place. The assailants reportedly confronted him near Igatpuri, accusing him of carrying beef.
"We are aware of the video and have identified the victim," a GRP official stated. "Some of the individuals involved in the assault have also been recognized, and an investigation is underway. However, no formal case has been filed yet."
