Today many Muslims around the world are busy celebrating the festival of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi. Followers of Islam consider this day to be especially important because it was on this day that Prophet Muhammad was born. In India it is known as 'Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi' or 'Mawlid-un-Nabi'. According to the Islamic calendar, this festival is celebrated on the 12th day of Rabi ul Awwal.

Celebrations around the world: Muslims around the world celebrate this special day. Streets are decorated, parades are held, and mosques and houses are adorned with colorful lights and decorations. However, you will be surprised to know that in many Muslim countries, there is no tradition of celebrating this festival and there is no celebration here.

Reasons for not celebrating Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi: Some Muslim communities celebrate Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi with great pomp, while others do not consider it as a celebration. The main reason for this is that nowhere in the Quran is it written that we should celebrate Maulid al-Nabi or the birthday of Prophet Muhammad. Prophet Muhammad neither celebrated any such celebration in his lifetime nor advised anyone to do so.

Islamic scholars say that the Prophet insisted on spending his birthday as a day of worship and prayer. Muslim communities like Salafi and Wahhabi do not celebrate this festival. They believe that the Prophet never talked about celebrating his birthday during his lifetime, so we should not do so either.

Opposition from Saudi Arabia and Qatar: While many Muslim countries celebrate Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi with great pomp, countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar oppose this practice. They believe that there is no authentic record of celebrating the Prophet's birthday. There is no mention of celebrating this day even in the 6 major books of Hadith. Although, some Hadiths mention that Prophet Muhammad was born on Monday, apart from this no concrete information is available.

What to do on Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi?: On this special day, Muslims are advised to do some special things:

Paying Zakat: Paying Zakat is an important act to help the poor.
Distribution of food: Distributing food among the poor and helping them is considered a swab act.
Offering Namaaz: One should offer Namaaz five times a day in mosques and homes.
Propagating the virtues of the Prophet: One should spread the word about the life, virtues, and teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
Prophet Muhammad is believed to have loved Thareed (meat and vegetable broth), served with crispy bread.
