Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has expressed his expectation of a raid by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in response to his recent critical speech targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Gandhi hinted at this possibility on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, August 1, stating, "Apparently, 2 in 1 didn’t like my Chakravyuh speech. ED ‘insiders’ tell me a raid is being planned. Waiting with open arms @dir_ed…..Chai and biscuits on me."
In his speech, Gandhi used the Chakravyuh strategy from the Hindu epic Mahabharata to critique current political tactics. He compared the strategy, which trapped the hero Abhimanyu, to what he sees as contemporary challenges facing India’s youth, farmers, women, and small businesses. Gandhi suggested that a similar trap is being set against these groups by the ruling party, symbolized by the lotus, which is also the BJP's symbol.
Gandhi drew parallels between the ancient military formation and what he perceives as a political and economic blockade in modern India, implicating figures such as Modi and Shah, as well as other influential individuals. He described a network of political and economic leaders, including Mohan Bhagwat, Ajit Doval, Gautam Adani, and Mukesh Ambani, as orchestrating this modern-day Chakravyuh. However, he was required to retract the names of Adani and Ambani during the speech due to their absence from the House.
Additionally, Gandhi criticized government agencies like the CBI, ED, and Income Tax Department, calling them the "heart" of the Chakravyuh. He argued that the recent budget is designed to reinforce the dominance of large corporations and support a political monopoly that undermines democratic processes.
