There are millions of types of animals found all over the world, but among birds, humans especially like pigeons. Their softness, colorful feathers and sweet voice attract people. You must have seen that in ancient times pigeons were used to send messages. Even today pigeons are used for spying in some places. But the question is how are pigeons so intelligent that they recognize the path and deliver the message to the right person?
Use of pigeons to send messages: In today's era, with the help of internet, we can send messages anywhere in a second. But this was not the case in old times. Then it used to take weeks, months or even years to send a message. Earlier people used to send messages on foot or with the help of a horse, which took a lot of time. Many times the messages were lost on the way or reached late, which troubled people. Then as a better option, people started using pigeons, because they were helpful in delivering messages fast and safely.
Amazing understanding of pigeons: Pigeons have a special quality that they never forget the way to their nest, no matter how far they are sent. Scientists have found that pigeons have a special ability to remember directions in their brain. They recognize the right path even after flying miles away and reach back to their nest.
Pigeons have a GPS-like brain: Pigeons have a kind of natural GPS system in their brain, which helps them to guess the direction correctly. This is due to their magnetoreception skill, which helps them to find their way based on the magnetic field of the earth. Apart from this, there is a group of 53 cells in their brain, which helps them in identifying direction and magnetic field.
Specialty of pigeons' eyes: The retina of pigeons' eyes contains a special type of protein called cryptochrome. With the help of this protein, they find their way quickly. This is the reason why pigeons were chosen as messengers in old times, because they did not forget the way and delivered the message quickly.
Why were pigeons chosen as messengers?: This unique ability of pigeons and their amazing understanding of remembering directions made them useful as messengers. That is why, from ancient times till now, pigeons have been used to send messages.
