Delhi Metro Sets New Passenger Journey Records: In the past month, Delhi Metro has shattered its own passenger journey records a remarkable 17 times. The latest record was set on August 20, with 77.48 lakh journeys in a single day, surpassing the previous record of 71.09 lakh set on February 13.
"Delhi Metro has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing its previous record 17 times in just one month, from August 12 to September 12," said Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications at Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
So far this year, 19 of the top 20 highest passenger journeys have occurred. In the past four days alone, from September 9 to September 12, the metro recorded some of its busiest days, with the second-highest journey count of 77.16 lakh on September 9. The third, fourth, and fifth highest counts were recorded on September 10, 11, and 12, respectively, at 75.71 lakh, 75.5 lakh, and 73.2 lakh.
The surge in passenger journeys has led the Delhi Metro to increase train services, adding 84 extra trips on Fridays and Saturdays. These additional services will continue on weekdays if necessary, according to a Delhi Metro official.
Passenger journeys are counted based on the number of metro lines used by commuters, while ridership data includes total tickets sold and metro cards used. Since 2019, Delhi Metro has been reporting passenger journeys rather than just ridership.
"This increased usage highlights Delhi Metro's reputation as a reliable and punctual transportation option, especially during the monsoon season, which helps avoid traffic delays and ensures timely arrivals," said Dayal. He also noted that connectivity has improved through 29 interchange stations, enhancing accessibility across Delhi-NCR.
To facilitate ticket purchases, Delhi Metro has introduced multiple channels including the DMRC Saarthi App, One Delhi App, WhatsApp, Paytm, and Amazon Pay, encouraging customers to use these options to avoid queues at ticket counters.
