NEW DELHI: Supriya Shrinate, a leader from the Congress party, has strongly criticized the government led by Prime Minister Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party. She has expressed support for India amidst her remarks.

In the capital city of New Delhi, on Wednesday, Supriya Shrinate, a prominent figure in the Congress party, took a dig at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government. Her criticism was centered around the sudden reduction in the prices of domestic cooking gas right before the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.

Shrinate commented, "Those who have been engaged in acts resembling robbery for a decade, are finding this move too late. The general public is well aware of the situation and is not easily fooled."

Using the platform 'X' (Twitter), the Congress leader labeled the government's decision as a 'so-called' gift to sisters. She remarked, "For those who have been engaging in activities akin to robbery for the past 10 years, this tardy action holds little significance. The public sees through their intentions. It is a testament to India's strength that those responsible for inflating fuel prices are now attempting to decrease them."

Supriya Shrinate also raised allegations against the central government, claiming that it has wrongfully gained a profit of Rs.30 lakh crores through fuel taxes over the last nine years. She further stated, "India is witnessing the sale of the most expensive cooking gas in the world. The cost of LPG has surged by a staggering 185% from 2014 to 2023."

"To put this into perspective, the price of an LPG cylinder was Rs.400 in 2014, and it has now risen to Rs.1140 in 2023," added Shrinate.

Earlier, Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, had characterized the price reduction as a special gift from the Prime Minister to sisters on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. He said, "Prime Minister Modi, like a brother, has decreased the cost of gas cylinders by Rs.200, aiming to bring joy into the lives of women during this festive period."

In a move that is set to provide relief to households across the nation, the Central government announced on Tuesday a cut of Rs.200 in the prices of cooking gas. This reduction has come into effect immediately, causing the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder to decrease by Rs.200 all over the country. For instance, in Delhi, the cost of a 14.2 kg cylinder has decreased from the previous Rs.1,103 per cylinder to the new price of Rs.903.
