Shillong: The opposition party Congress has suffered a major setback in Meghalaya. In fact, 12 out of its 17 MLAs, led by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, are set to join the Trinamool Congress on Thursday. H.M. Shangpliang, one of the MLAs who parted ways with Congress, gave this information.
In fact, Shangpliang, MLA from Mawsynram in East Khasi Hills district, said in a conversation last Wednesday night, "In Meghalaya, 12 out of 17 Congress MLAs have decided to join the Trinamool Congress. We will formally join the Trinamool Congress led by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma (Ex CM Mukul Sangma). He also said, "Congress MLAs will join Trinamool Congress at a function at 1 pm.''
Moreover, an official in Shillong has also informed that a group of MLAs who have parted ways with the Congress and joined the Trinamool Congress have handed over the list of MLAs to Assembly Speaker M Lyngdoh and informed him about their decision. According to reports, the Leader of Opposition in Assembly Sangma was reportedly unhappy with the top Congress leadership. A senior TMC leader claimed that with the coming up of new MLAs, Trinamool Congress has become the main opposition party in the state.
Sources close to the case said that in view of the 2023 Meghalaya elections, members of election strategist Prashant Kishore's team are in Shillong to explore the TMC's options in the state. Meghalaya Pradesh Trinamool Congress was formally launched in 2012 with the intention of contesting 35 out of 60 seats in the state.
