A significant data breach has impacted over 237,000 Comcast customers after a ransomware attack in February 2024, according to recent court filings. The breach exposed sensitive customer information and occurred due to an attack on Financial Business and Consumer Solutions (FBCS), a debt collection agency previously employed by Comcast.
The hackers gained access to FBCS's network between February 14 and February 26, 2024, allowing them to steal sensitive data and encrypt certain systems. The compromised data includes names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, Comcast account numbers, and internal ID numbers used by FBCS.
Although Comcast ceased using FBCS for debt collection in 2020, the breach affected customers who were Comcast subscribers in 2021. Initially, FBCS reported no customer information had been compromised. However, in July 2024, FBCS informed Comcast of the breach, delaying the notification process for affected individuals.
Comcast is now reaching out to affected customers and offering guidance on preventing identity theft. The company is also providing at least 12 months of free identity theft protection services through CyEx Identity Defense Complete, which includes credit monitoring. Customers are being advised to remain alert to any signs of fraud and review their account statements closely.
