COAI Raises Alarm Over Illegal Sale of Wi-Fi 6E Routers on Indian E-commerce Platforms

A major industry body, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), has raised concerns about the illegal sale of Wi-Fi 6E wireless routers, which use the 6 GHz frequency band, on Indian e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart. These unauthorized routers are being sold to consumers despite lacking government approval, according to a letter obtained from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) .

The COAI has requested the DoT to intervene and enforce strict regulations to ban the sale of Wi-Fi devices using the 6 GHz spectrum on online marketplaces. Data from the Delhi-based telecom industry group indicates that well-known manufacturers like TP-Link, Deco, Netgear, and Google are selling Wi-Fi 6E routers in India through popular e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Moglix.

The letter stressed that the DoT has not yet made a policy decision regarding the use of the 6 GHz band. It warned that the sale of these illegal devices could lead to unauthorized transmissions in the country and place responsibility on consumers for these unauthorized transmissions, rather than on the real offenders. According to the Indian Telecommunications Act, 2023, the government owns the spectrum, and any use of it requires assignment from the Central government.
