NEW DELHI: The central government has allocated Rs.12,554 crore this year to aid states in disaster relief and rehabilitation efforts. This funding aims to support people affected by various natural disasters, according to officials. Additionally, the Union Home Ministry has sanctioned Rs.890.69 crore to five states for enhancing and expanding their fire services through the Scheme for Expansion and Modernisation of Fire Services.
The Rs.12,554 crore funding comes from several sources, including the National Disaster Mitigation Fund, National Disaster Response Fund, State Disaster Mitigation Fund, and State Disaster Response Fund. It will be used for various initiatives, such as urban flood management, strengthening fire services, and mitigating risks associated with glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), as highlighted in the first 100 days of the Modi 3.0 administration.
As part of the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Mitigation Programme, Rs.150 crore has been allocated to Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. This funding will support both structural and non-structural measures to address the risks posed by GLOFs.
Furthermore, Rs.2,514.36 crore has been sanctioned for the Integrated Urban Flood Management Project and the Urban Flood Risk Management Programme. This money will help states develop comprehensive solutions for managing urban floods.
The Central government has also approved the 'Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme,' an extension of the existing 'Upscaling of Aapda Mitra Scheme,' with a budget of Rs.470.50 crore.
