Brazil's telecommunications regulator has announced that it is suspending access to Elon Musk's social media platform, X, in response to a court order. This move follows a prolonged dispute between Musk and a Brazilian Supreme Court justice over free speech and misinformation.
The social network missed a court-imposed deadline to appoint a legal representative in Brazil, prompting the suspension. Musk has argued that the judge’s actions amount to unjust censorship, while the justice insists that regulating hate speech on social media is necessary.
The conflict began after the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered the blocking of bank accounts associated with Starlink, a satellite internet service operated by Musk's SpaceX. The shutdown of X in Brazil is the latest development in this ongoing feud. Musk, who is a vocal supporter of Republican candidate Donald Trump, warned that a similar situation could occur in the United States if Democratic candidate Kamala Harris were to gain power.
Musk recently posted on X, stating, "The attacks this year on free speech are unprecedented in the 21st century. It will happen in America too if Kamala/Walz gain power." He urged his followers to pay attention to the statements made by Harris and Tim Walz. Musk also shared a video of Harris advocating for the suspension of Trump’s account from X, criticizing her stance as a threat to free speech.
Brazil Takes Action Against X
Prior to the suspension, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes warned Musk that X would be blocked in Brazil if the company failed to comply with the court’s order. The platform has been without a legal representative in the country since earlier this month. De Moraes criticized Musk for disregarding Brazilian sovereignty and acting as though he were above the law.
