In a strategic move aimed at bolstering its position ahead of the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has inducted actor-politician Suresh Gopi and seasoned BJP functionary George Kurian into the Narendra Modi 3.0 Cabinet.
Subheading: Suresh Gopi and George Kurian bring diverse strengths to BJP's Kerala strategy
Actor-politician Suresh Gopi, who made history as the BJP's first Lok Sabha MP from Kerala, was sworn in as a Union Minister of State. The 66-year-old, a prominent figure in Malayalam cinema with over 250 films to his credit, brings extensive public appeal and a strong political background to the role. Previously a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 2016 to 2022, Gopi contested from the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency in 2019 and the Assembly segment in 2021.
Born into the forward Nair community, Gopi completed his schooling at Infant Jesus Anglo-Indian School, Tangasseri, and pursued higher studies at Fatima Mata National College, Kollam, earning a BSc in Zoology and an MA in English Language and Literature. His contributions to cinema have been recognized with numerous awards, including the National Film Award for Best Actor and the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor in 1998 for his performance in "Kaliyattam". He currently serves as the president of the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kolkata, and is married to Radhika Nair, granddaughter of the late actress Aranmula Ponnamma.
George Kurian, another key induction into the Modi ministry, serves as a State general secretary of the BJP in Kerala. A seasoned political strategist and a lawyer with a degree in Hindi, Kurian has held prominent positions within the party, including vice chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, and national vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. He has also served as the district president of the Kottayam unit.
Despite not being a member of either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha, Kurian’s induction into the Cabinet underscores the BJP’s strategic outreach to the Christian community in Kerala, where he is widely respected within the Syrian Catholic denomination. Married to O.T. Annamma, a retired Lt. Colonel from the Naval Base in Kochi, Kurian's professional journey includes serving as an Officer on Special Duty for former Union Minister of State for Railways and veteran BJP leader O. Rajagopal during A.B. Vajpayee’s tenure as Prime Minister.
The dual induction of Suresh Gopi and George Kurian into the Modi government is seen as a calculated move by the BJP to strengthen its base in Kerala, a state traditionally dominated by the Congress-led UDF and the Left-led LDF alliances. With the Assembly elections looming in 2026, their appointments are expected to play a crucial role in the BJP’s electoral strategy in the state.
