Outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe has suffered a major defeat in Sri Lanka's general elections. Left leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has won a landslide victory and is now going to become the new President of Sri Lanka. About 75 percent of voters participated in the voting held on 21 September. In this election, Anura Kumara Dissanayake moved towards victory with 52% votes, while Ranil Wickremesinghe got only 16% votes and remained in third place. Sajith Premadasa is in second place with 22% votes.
Dissanayake contested the election as a candidate of the National People's Power (NPP) coalition, which also includes his party Janatha Vimukthi Peremuna (JVP). This was the first election after the economic crisis in 2022, which gave Dissanayake a chance. He promised to end corruption and bring a new political culture, which the public trusted.
Ranil Wickremesinghe's Foreign Minister Ali Sabry also accepted the election results and congratulated Anura Kumara Dissanayake on his victory. He said that in a democracy it is important to respect the decision of the people. This election took place amidst Sri Lanka's political and economic crisis, which made the path of victory easy for Dissanayake. Dissanayake's NPP party had got only 3% votes in the last election, but this time the public trusted him and made him victorious.
