Bangalore airport has stopped charging a controversial entry fee for vehicles after facing protests. Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) had recently introduced a fee for using the arrival pick-up lanes at Terminals 1 and 2. However, due to public opposition, Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) decided to suspend the fee shortly after its implementation.

Initially, there was resistance from drivers, prompting BIAL to halt the fee collection temporarily. Sources from BIAL mentioned that taxi aggregators and airport taxis, which have their own lanes, were exempt from this fee.

Previously, private vehicles could access the pick-up lanes for free for the first seven minutes, after which they were charged Rs 150 for the next seven minutes. Commercial vehicles had to pay Rs 150 for the first seven minutes and Rs 300 for the subsequent seven minutes. Buses were charged Rs 600, and Tempo Travellers Rs 300. A flat fee of Rs 600 applied if the ticket was lost.

Vehicles left unattended for more than 15 minutes in the pick-up area would be towed to the police station at the owner's expense. According to the notice, vehicles with white registration plates were classified as private, while those with yellow plates, self-drive yellow plates, and EV commercial vehicles were considered commercial.

Critics pointed out that passengers already pay a toll at Sadahalli gate to reach the airport, in addition to the user fee charged by BIAL. They argued that the new entry fee was not in the interest of passengers.

Separately, the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has installed speed trap cameras on Kempegowda International Airport Road to curb road traffic accidents caused by overspeeding. These cameras will automatically detect and issue fines for speeding violations. The legal speed limit on this road is 80 km per hour, and drivers exceeding this limit will face fines for overspeeding.
