PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry Assembly, which commenced its budget session on August 10 with the customary address by Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan adjourned sine die, in a first of its kind.

Soundararajan presented her address in Tamil, which lasted 70 minutes. A John Kumar, a BJP legislature, and A K D Arumugham, an AINRC government whip, proposed a vote of thanks for her speech. The House would consider the motion of gratitude to the Lt Governor's address on a later date, said Speaker R. Selvam.

Selvam also made the sine die announcement for the House. Since Chief Minister N Rangasamy was expected to officially declare the date of the budget presentation for the fiscal year 2022–2023, this was essentially the first time.
Rangasamy left Delhi on Tuesday evening after meeting with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Seetharaman to request increased government funding for Puducherry in the amount of Rs 2000 crores.

The explanation for the House's sine die adjournment was kept a secret. Earlier, as soon as the Lt. Governor began reading her address, every opposition member from the DMK and Congress wearing black shirts got up in protest against the "shortcomings" in the administration. After expressing their displeasure at the Center's "silence" in response to the request for central assistance with the budget, they all staged a walkout.

The opposition members also voiced their objection to the Center's decision to privatise the delivery of electricity as well as its neglect of the union territory.
