Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh High Court declared on Thursday that the state government should implement the Capital Region Development Authority Act (CRDA) and construct Amaravati as the capital, as per the master plan, within six months, in a defeat to the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led Andhra Pradesh government.
On Thursday, a division bench led by Chief Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra issued a final ruling on a batch of petitions challenging the acts on decentralisation and repeal of the AP CRDA, ruling that the state legislature lacked the authority to pass legislation on the state's capital and ordering the state government not to relocate any offices from Amaravati, the state's current capital.
The court also ordered the state government to reimburse the petitioners Rs 50,000. The court also ordered the state administration to keep it updated on the implementation of its ruling on the development of Amaravati, the state capital.
Farmers in Amaravati, the current capital region, objected to the state government's proposal to divide the state into three capitals. The farmers said that the government had agreed to surrender their land under the Land Pooling Scheme (LPS), intending to create a new capital.
